From the endless horizons of the Sahara Desert, which makes up eighty percent of Algerian territory, to atmospheric Algiers on the Mediterranean coast, the second largest nation in Africa has drawn settlers from across the Mediterranean, North Africa and the Middle East for thousands of years.
Independence from France in 1962 brought democracy but also the civil war of the 1990’s between Islamic militants and the military. This fascinating land has much to offer visitors but the ongoing threat of kidnapping and terrorist attacks by Islamic extremists makes travel extremely risky.

Vooruitzichten
De vooruitzichten voor Algerije.
Algerije heeft een subtropisch klimaat aan de kust (milde, natte winters en hete droge zomers). De Hoge Plateaus tot aan de Sahara-Atlas hebben een steppeklimaat, met in de zomer kans op een hete en verstikkende sirocco vanuit de Sahara. Ten zuiden hiervan bevindt zich een woestijnklimaat. De woestijn is het heetst in de maand mei; de temperaturen kunnen dan oplopen tot 55 °C.
