The southern African Republic of Angola has a 1600 kilometre, arid coastline where the rolling sand dunes of the Namib Desert meet crashing, South Atlantic waters.

Inland, the landscape is much greener and inclines sharply to form a steep escarpment, which meets the high plateau (planalto) region in the east. Decades of civil war after independence from Portugal in 1975 have taken their toll on Angola’s population, infrastructure and economy. A cease-fire agreement reached in 2002 has brought hopes of continued peace and riches from Angolan diamonds and oil, even though corruption and poverty endure under the dos Santos regime.
