This landlocked, West African nation is also known simply as Burkina, meaning ‘land of the incorruptible people’.

Once a territory of the Sahelian kingdoms and partly populated by descendants of the Mossi Empire, this land is still known as the cultural centre of the Sahel and is famous for its djembé (drum) and balafon (like a xylophone) music. The desert in the north of the country contrasts with the green south, irrigated by rivers. Here, the city of Banfora is fast becoming popular with visitors for its surroundings: the Karfiguela Falls, the hippos at Lake Tengrela and the hiking trails through the Sindou Peaks.
