Independent from Britain since 1964, the Republic of Malawi became a democratic state in 1993.

Landlocked in south-eastern Africa, Malawi has a spectacular landscape of highlands and lakes. The largest, Lake Malawi, covers more than 23,000 square kilometres, a fifth of the country’s area. The Malawian people are extremely friendly to foreigners to the extent that this land has been dubbed ‘the warm heart of Africa’.
