San hunter-gatherers were the first to inhabit these lands, migrating through the Zambezi River valley from the northwest between the 1st and 4th centuries AD.

By the time the Portuguese navigator, Vasco da Gama, reached Mozambique in 1498, there were many Arab-Swahili trade settlements established along the coast, ruled for several centuries by local Sultans. Independence from the Portuguese in 1975 brought decades of instability and civil war, but today’s Mozambique is a multiparty democracy and has achieved solid economic success. The stunning Indian Ocean beaches, myriad coral islands, unforgettable diving and rich traditional cultures bode well for future tourism. Inland, boundless savannah grasslands are irrigated by the monumental Zambezi and Limpopo Rivers and rise to forested highlands in the centre and north of the country.
