Taking its name from the main waterway of West Africa, Niger was unified from several independent ethnic regions in 1922 by the French.

Today, many Nigeriens farm the fertile river bank and surrounding grasslands but to the north, the austerely beautiful Aïr Mountains and dusty Sahara were once greener and home to nomadic pastoralists and trans-saharan traders. Many sophisticated rock carvings remain in the dark granite, some dating back to 6000 BC, and in the city of Agadéz, camel caravans still maintain the trade routes of the region.
