Divided by the Hindu Kush mountain range, the green valleys of the north and the deserts of the southern plateaus are united by scorching temperatures in summer and deep snow in the winter.

Afghanistan is an ancient crossroads of trade and migration and for millennia this land has been a meeting point between East and West. Since Alexander the Great, powerful empires have battled to control this important region and the last thirty years have seen equally fierce fighting, firstly due to the 1979 Soviet invasion and more recently by NATO forces to remove the Islamic fundamentalist Taliban rulers.
