For over 500 years, the Hindu and Buddhist Khmer Empire controlled mainland Southeast Asia from Angkor, situated in the north-west of this flat, forested country.
Political change during the Vietnam war resulted in the four year communist regime of the Khmer Rouge, whose brutal oppression of the people killed an estimated two million Cambodians. In recent years however, increasing political stability and steady reconstruction efforts offer hopes of prosperity, with tourism playing a vital role. Cambodia has a lot to offer these visitors: a rich history and culture, the famous Temples of Angkor, deserted tropical islands and white sand beaches at Sihanoukville and the bustling capital Phnom Penh, to name but a few.
