In the north-east lies Lake Issyk Kul, the second largest mountain lake in the world which has rich endemic fish biodiversity and was a popular summer resort for the Soviets. Since independence in 1991, Kyrgyzstan has taken important steps towards democracy, including becoming a member of the UN and the OSCE.
