Once part of British India, the nation was founded in 1947 after violence between Muslims (Pakistan) and Hindus (India) led to partition of the states. Pakistan is keen to jump-start its tourism industry and the diverse attractions include the UNESCO protected ancient ruins of the Indus Valley Civilisation and Himalayan winter sports. However, extensive travel warnings from many governments are still in place for most regions.
