This nation, dominated by the vast Karakum desert, has been independent from the Soviet Union since 1991.

Colossal oil and natural gas fields on the coast of the Caspian Sea sustain much of Turkmenistan’s economy, despite the Russian control over many pipelines, which limits revenue. Very few Turkmen benefit from this income because of the authoritarian, corrupt government and much of the population struggles below the poverty line.
