Central Asia’s most populous country, Uzbekistan is mostly made up of flat, desert plains, with mountains and fertile valleys in the east.

Ancient oasis settlements along the old Silk Road to China boast many architectural jewels and the UNESCO protected, walled city of Khiva is one of the best preserved. Soviet imposed, ecologically disastrous cotton crops and the world’s largest open-pit gold mine do little to aid economic growth and living standards are poor with widespread violation of even the most basic human rights.
