Azerbaijan is full of contrast: medieval mosques with ornate minarets compete with Soviet architecture in bustling streets; the wealth and five-star hotels of the booming oil industry are juxtaposed with widespread poverty. In the capital, Baku, the 15th century Shirvanshah’s Palace is joined in the old centre by many other historical buildings, such as the Synyk Kalah Minaret from 1093 and the harbour here is known for being the finest on the Caspian Sea.
