Northern Danube lowlands rise to a rugged central and southern landscape, dominated by the Rila, Pirin and Balkan mountain ranges.

In the east, cliffs are interspersed with calm, sandy coves on the 354 kilometre Black Sea coast. One of the newest EU members, Bulgaria’s tourism and property industries have flourished, but expansion is concentrated around popular ski and beach resorts and plenty remains largely undiscovered by foreign visitors. Hike some of the 35,000 kilometres of marked trails to reach some breathtaking sights and rare mammals in one of Bulgaria’s national parks, get a taste of traditional culture by joining the locals at one of the many festivals held throughout the year or explore the cobbled streets, ancient ruins and well-preserved Roman amphitheatres of Plovdiv.
