Reisinformatie: Turkey
Transcontinental Turkey straddles Europe and Asia, a bridge between East and West, with sun-drenched coastlines on the Aegean, Mediterranean, Marmara and Black Seas.
This young Republic declared independence in 1923 after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, but the region is one of the oldest continuously inhabited in the world. Recorded history, from the earliest Neolithic farming settlements (9000 BC) to the Hittite and Byzantine Empires, is illustrated across the land with archaeological marvels and splendorous buildings from antiquity. Some of the best can be found in the Greco-Roman city of Ephesus, carefully restored and once the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. To sample modern Turkey, trek the mountains, wooded shoreline and aquamarine bays of the Lycian Way, steam yourself in the local hammam, try the spicy dishes, sweet pastries and strong coffee of the east-west cuisine or shop for carpets, local ceramics and silver jewellery in the world’s largest covered market - Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar.
