Independent since 1946, after dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, this constitutional monarchy lies east of the Jordan River.

The red, desert plateaus, interspersed with irrigated agricultural land, are famous for the many ancient cities and archaeological sites, including the fantastically preserved Roman ruins at Jerash and the “rose-red city half as old as time” carved into the rocks at Petra. To the south, Jordan’s narrow, Red Sea coastline offers luxury beach resorts, crystal waters and teeming coral seascapes, making it perfect for scuba diving.
