This small, mountainous country on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean was once blanketed with Cedars of Lebanon, the national emblem, and homeland of the ancient, seafaring civilisation of the Phoenicians.

Numerous, succeeding empires controlled this region, ultimately the Ottomans and superbly preserved remnants of these powers can be found in the age-old cities of Byblos, Baalbek and Tyre. After independence, tourism and banking became pillars of the economy and remain so today, despite the devastation caused by the fifteen year civil war and the more recent conflict between Hezbollah and Israel.
