The population density is low and the two main islands are a vast pristine wilderness of snow-topped mountains, fjords, pastures, subtropical forests and untouched beaches. Geographical isolation from the rest of the world has resulted in exceptionally unique wildlife and about 80% of New Zealand’s flora is found exclusively on these islands. The people are mainly of British, Irish and Dutch heritage but there is a considerable Maori population that descends from Polynesian settlers who arrived here around 1000 AD.
